On Feb. 14, 1906, with help
from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, Winston-Salem & Forsyth County’s first public library opened in the building which
is now Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church on Cherry Street. The downtown Library moved to its current location on Fifth
Street in 1953. The George Moses Horton Branch
Library for Negroes opened as the first branch library in 1927, and the
FCPL system has steadily expanded to include the current 12 locations.
